Akumal: A Family-Friendly Destination Along the Riviera Maya

Suffice to say, I'm not really a fan of busy beaches and wild night parties on the sands. These parties tend to be noisy and far from being wholesome. When I go on a vacation beside the beach, I only expect the opportunity to sleep and enjoy the tranquility of the waters that run just beside me. Would you imagine that such a place is just located very near the party-famous Cancun?

Akumal lives up to this idea. Located just about 100 km south of Cancun, this small beachside town of over 200 has managed to keep up with its image of being a getaway. The environment is very tranquil, and the water's so clear. If you like snorkeling, you can do so in peace without having to worry about couples in jetskis or banana boats.

In the Mayan language, Akumal roughly translates to "place of the turtles," and this is because of the fact that the area has been a nesting ground of green and loggerhead turtles for many centuries already. If you are interested in seeing them at work while they are undergoing their nesting season, better be here between May and October as the same turtles use their instincts in order to get to the shores of Akumal and lay their eggs under the sands.

Akumal is not only about nature, too, as it perfectly balances itself as a destination for both history and nature lovers. Some of the most interesting Mayan ruins in the country are located nearby Akumal. Its position in the Riviera Maya gives it easy access to the Tulum Mayan ruins, where you can go on a day trip in order to reflect about the country's historic past.

Akumal is a family-friendly town that promotes tranquility in a beach destination, but if you ever change your mind and decide to go on a party, there's always nearby Playa del Carmen and Cancun to provide you with the night party activities that you want after the clock strikes past 12.
