One cornerstone of indigenous Mexican art is the weaving crafts from the people of the Zapotec tribe. The members of this tribe are very famous for their handicraft arts, which will give you a clear idea about that people's village, lifestyle, and history depending on the design that is chosen to be made.

For Zapotec weaving, it is already typical to use vibrant colors for the design, reflecting the joyful nature of the people. The Zapotec tribe was initially one of North America's most notable hunting tribe, until the people transitioned to becoming craftsmen. Aside from woven crafts, the Zapotec people are also well-known for their pottery. For a time, the Zapotec people ruled much of Mexico's Oaxaca Valley, until they were defeated by the Mixtecs, who in turn were defeated by the Aztecs.

Today, the Zapotecs remain in Mexico, although they remain as a large minority group. Most of the people are already employed in modern jobs, but the tradition of creating woven crafts and pottery continue to linger. The tradition still lives on for many of the Zapotecs.

The first step in creating the weaving is cleaning the wool, or removing twigs, leaves, and other debris. Note that the Zapotecs usually use Merino wool for this purpose. They then spin the wool on ancient wooden spinning wheels, taking them about two to three days to spin an ordinary weaving design.

The next step would be coloring the dye. There's no definite recipe for the dyes because they vary from family to family. Each group or family has its own style of creating the dye, which is extracted from mixing together various natural sources. As for the design, it also varies, mixing together both modern and pre-Columbian influences. A weaving of about four to five square feet could actually take about a month to finish.

So much effort is poured into these artworks, obviously. You can just imagine how much importance the Zapotec people give to this important component of their tradition and culture. Why not try to take a look at these crafts and judge for yourself?
