Radish Festival in Oaxaca

Thank author of this post/comment

If you think the Halloween in the West is weird enough for having pumpkins carved out to become spooky Halloween figures, then check out how the people in Oaxaca use the radish as a decorative medium during the Radish Festival during the Christmas season.

The Night of the Radishes is actually one of the most anticipated celebrations in Oaxaca every year. During this festival, accomplished radish artists carve out and decorate the radishes to become animals, dancers, saints, and everything possible that you can carve out of the radishes. Once the artists are done with their creations, you cannot actually determine that these figures were once edible vegetables.

Nobody really knows for sure when the festival originated, but some people put it at around nearly the end of the 20th century. During the markets of Christmas eve, the sellers then sold a variety of dried fishes and vegetables. To differentiate them from one another the sellers were said to carve out radishes of different people. From then on, the tradition was picked up by the other locals and eventually contests were then held each year to determine the best radish sculptures.

Every year, the festival is held every December 23rd. The radish artists start their creations days in advance to be able to make it on time for the festival, where all of the sculptures are displayed in the Zocalo. There are workshops for children to be able to teach them the art of radish sculpture. The winners are then announced during the evening of the festival, but the festivities don't stop just right there. Eventually, floats from the different churches in the city are paraded around the Zocalo during Christmas Eve.

We all have our own ways of celebrating Christmas. Some cities just have weirder ways compared to the others. Some may stun, but the essence of celebrating the season is still there. Oaxaca just definitely is on the weirder side of things. Just how many people dream up of carving vegetables into very realistic sculptures?
