Scholars and enthusiasts of Mexican and Mesoamerican history should make it a point to visit the National Museum of Anthropology ( Museo Nacional de Antropologia ). The museum, located in Chapultepec Park in Mexico City, is among the country's national museum and is the holder of the world's largest collection of ancient Mexican art and artifacts on Mexican and Mesoamerican history. The National Museum of Anthropology was established in 1974 in order to have a center for ancient Mexican history in Mexico. contains about 23 exhibition halls, each of which detailing specific periods in the history of the country and the region. Together, these exhibits cover almost 8 hectares of exhibition space. These same exhibits surround a concrete umbrella supported only by a single post, one of the highlights of the museum. The most famous of these ancient exhibits is the Aztec sunstone, which served as a cosmological calendar during the time of the Aztecs. Other exhibits worth noting are the Mayan exhibition room, where there's a recreation of Pakal's tomb; and the Oaxaca exhibit room. There's also the replica of Moctezuma's feathered headdress, Pakal's jade death mask, and so on. Getting so close to the artifacts will show you enough details that will make anyone enthusiastic about Mexican history giddy with excitement. In the upper areas of the museum, meanwhile, contain ethnographic displays centered about the lives of these ancient people and the way they lives. This includes photos, maps, clothing, and religious articles that overall gives us a good story about the past of Mexico. Indeed, visiting the National Museum of Anthropology is a step right back to the past, like a time machine brought you back a few hundred years ago.
